Karen Geary

Registered Nutritional Therapist & BANT Registered Nutritionist®. BSc (Hons), DipION, mBANT, CNHC. Functional Medicine Practitioner AFMCP.

Founder of Amplify Nutritional Therapy, I run a busy nutrition practice for busy people.  I’m an unashamed foodie, hunting out some of the best restaurants in the world, the local hedgerows, as well as being keen in the kitchen.  I have been vegan, vegetarian, paleo (and everything in between), and am currently an omnivore which means I eat everything. In reality, I’m mostly paleo, but I relax a bit at the weekends. I believe you can eat most things in moderation.

I graduated from the world renowned The Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London with the University of Portsmouth gaining a BSc. (Hons) in Nutritional Therapy, and I continue to undertake advanced training in nutritional therapy.  My research project was on the topic of sleep during menopause which won an award for research most likely to inform nutritional therapy practice.

I have also completed the Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) Program with the Institute for Functional Medicine in the USA and I apply this approach in my clinical practice. I’m also a certified Metabolic Balance® practitioner - a personalised way of eating for metabolic health and optimum weight. My specialty is gut and metabolic health.

I’m a former C-Suite executive with a 25+ year track record of leadership in the global technology sector based in Europe and the US.  I have seen first hand how taking your health for granted when under sustained pressure, travelling incessantly or working across time zones can take a personal heavy toll.

In 2014, I moved to the Bay Area of California.  I became sick and overweight and so I embarked on a mission to find out why.  The word ‘microbiome’ was having its moment in the sun for the first time and the nerd in me wanted to learn more.  I did my first gut health test as well as a DNA test and started studying after I read somewhere that 70% of chronic illness can be attributed to diet and lifestyle.

I returned to the UK in early 2016 but continued to travel back and forth to the US in a different role.  Biohacking had become a ‘thing’ and working long hours whilst intermittently fasting had become an extreme sport in Silicon Valley.  I followed the biohacking crowd and got nowhere with my health.  By 2018 I was so fed up with air travel, I could permanently smell that unmistakable fragrance of a British Airways plane on my clothes.

What started out as a nerdy passion in science and data, got completely out of hand and now here I am running a successful nutrition practice.

This was not a passing fad; back in the late 90’s I bought a copy of The Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford after a diagnosis of endometriosis.  I could not put it down and it inspired me to attend The School for Optimum Nutrition (ION) where at that time, Patrick was still lecturing.  I did the first year of the course but my corporate career took off and my passion was parked.  Little did I know that I would be back some 15 years later and it would become an area of deep expertise.  I’m glad I waited – the science of nutrition has moved on exponentially which means I’m armed with the latest knowledge and something new comes up every single day.

In June 2020, The New Scientist reported on a large study that looked at the effects of genetics, the microbiome and lifestyle factors on metabolism.  It confirmed what I had already learned; people respond to food in different ways.  One size does not fit all.  My entire training has been based on the need for personalised nutrition based on an approach called Functional Medicine.  It is proactive, predictive, and personalised and it empowers people.  I work with you because I recognise that we are all biochemically different and have different needs and goals.

To finish the story, after experiencing the powerful impact of nutrition on my own health, I have developed a passion to help others benefit from my expertise.  We are becoming more aware than ever that our own health and wellbeing drives and promotes success and our productivity, helping us to perform at our best.  But we often need help to get there.

I’m still very active in the corporate world and I am delighted to be able to combine my love and expertise of nutritional therapy with executive coaching and mentoring in order to be able to help people achieve their wellness objectives.

Professionally Qualified and Registered

I am a member of The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), which requires me to abide by strict codes of practice.

I am registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), supported by the Department of Health which ensures my training to be of the highest standard laid down by the National Occupational Standards.  I regularly attend lectures and events to enhance clinical practice.

I am also a member of The Institute for Functional Medicine, The British Psychological Society and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel & Development.

Choosing the right practitioner for you

There is currently no legal requirement for nutrition practitioners to be qualified or registered.  Please make sure that you are being seen by someone with the appropriate level of skill especially when there are so many courses in nutrition that are very short and can be purchased over the internet.  Registered Nutritionists have spent years studying and provide evidence-based information and guidance about the impact of food and nutrition on health and wellbeing.  When taking an advice from a nutritionist, always check they have studied, are registered and belong to a governing body.

What People Are Saying

“Having always considered myself to eat a healthy diet, I was experiencing issues around menstrual cycle, mood swings and low energy when I met Karen.  From the get go, Karen really took the time to delve into my diet and understand my eating habits - from the food diary that I kept prior to our first meeting and then during our conversations.  Due to her approach I felt immediately at ease in discussing a number of issues related to my health and diet that I hadn’t shared with anyone else and for the most part buried under the busyness of every day life.  Karen opened my eyes to the dietary rut I found myself in and how to go about improving it with the intent to tackle my health issues and increase overall health.  By incorporating the personalised programme, I have experienced quite the transformation - an abundance of energy; significantly reduced menstrual issues; feel much happier and lighter overall with glowing skin.  Thank you Karen for opening my eyes, supporting me in transforming my diet and health and setting me up for success in life!”

“It was so calming and reassuring to have a professional body ‘on hand’ who could actually help me understand some of the medical jargon and also give me explanations as to why certain things are the way they are and why they can (or can’t) impact on your wellbeing. On top of that, the nutritional advice was straightforward and easy to follow which is great for everyone with a busy schedule”
