Functional Nutritional Therapy - what it is

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and personalised care.  It is recognised as a complementary medicine and is appropriate both for individuals looking to enhance their health and wellbeing as well as for those with chronic conditions wishing to work with a nutritional therapist in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Nutritional therapists are trained to understand how nutrients, lifestyle factors and biochemical individuality influence nutritional balance and how the body works.   We use a wide range of tools to identify potential imbalances and seek to understand how these may be contributing to your health concerns and wellbeing.

This means that I consider every individual as biochemically unique and I only recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programs tailored according to your needs and never a ‘one size fits all’ approach.  I do not recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and will always refer a client with what I would call a ‘red flag’ sign or symptom to their medical professional.  I will also work alongside a medical professional or other specialist healthcare professional involved in your wellbeing, taking care to explain any nutritional therapy that has been provided.

Nutritional Therapy uses a functional medicine approach

My nutritional therapy training is based on the principles of Functional Medicine.  Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of poor health rather than managing symptoms, looking to identifying the root cause of what you might be experiencing.  It is a SCIENCE based approach to health and healing that looks at the body as a whole integrated system.

It looks to understand your overall wellbeing, your lifestyle, what and how you eat, your work environment, how you relax, medical treatments and history, nutrient status, medications, family history.  All of these areas impact our long-term health.  I place emphasis on finding out where the symptoms or conditions are coming from and what might be keeping these symptoms active.  It involves understanding the origins, prevention and management of often complex or chronic conditions.

This is a therapeutic partnership where you as an individual are at the centre of the consultation - not just your symptoms.  By listening to you and obtaining a detailed health history, together we consider the complex web of interactions in your health, physiology, diet and lifestyle.  I am supported by the very latest scientific research, laboratory testing, supportive supplement and therapeutic foods, eating programs and lifestyle therapies which are tailored specifically to your needs.  You can learn more about Functional Medicine here.

Why nutritional therapy can help you

Nutritional Therapists recognise that each person is an individual, with unique requirements. We take time to understand your situation and create personalised nutrition plans rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Nutrition and lifestyle approaches to healthcare have been shown to support the health of all the major systems of the body.

Typical priorities will include support to achieve optimum energy levels, healthy blood sugar balance, emotional and psychological wellbeing, optimum digestive health and creating a way of eating tailored to your needs.
